Sened Sbhatu

Associate, Commerce & Culture Desk

Sened Sbhatu is an Economics and International Relations student at the Australian National University (BA). Throughout her studies she has developed an interest in how markets shape and connect the global community, and how trade serves as a force for peace and prosperity. As part of her studies, she was awarded an Australian Government New-Colombo Mobility Grant, which enabled her to travel to rural China and experience on-the-ground impact of China’s rural revitalisation program. This immersive experience reinforced the value of engaging with diverse communities and its role in building a stronger society.

Beyond her studies, Sened served as a youth sub-committee member with the Migrant and Refugee Settlement Service. In this role, she organized the annual youth summit on anti-extremism, aimed at preventing radicalisation and fostering a sense of belonging in Australian society among migrant and refugee youths.

Further showcasing her commitment to promoting cultural tolerance and learning, Sened co-founded and presides over the ANU African Cultural Society. As President, she seeks to build a community for African students in Canberra and at ANU, while simultaneously bringing attention to the rich cultures, histories, and traditions of Africa. She has actively worked to connect the society with the broader Canberra community through embassy visits, festival participation, festival participation, and other activities that help engage and empower African students in Canberra.
